Compositae

Members of the Daisy Family are plentiful and include both edibles and ornamentals. All varieties have perfect flowers and most are self-compatible, meaning they do not need the assistance of insects to become pollinated.

  • coronarium–shungiku
  • endiva–endive, escarole
  • intybus–chicory (witloof chicory)
  • cardunculus–cardoon
  • scolymus–artichoke (globe artichoke)
  • annuus–sunflower
  • maximiliani–edible rooted sunflower
  • tuberosus–Jerusalem artichoke (sunroot)
  • sativa–lettuce, celtuce
  • sonchifolia–yacon
  • hispanica–black salsify (scorzonera)
  • porrifolious–salsify
  • pratensis–wild salsify
Italic words=species, regular words=variety
*Remember that varieties within the same species are likely to cross-pollinate with one another and you must take proper precautions to isolate these if you or a neighbor are growing more than one variety within the same species.

Click on the orange words to find more information on how to plant and save seeds from these varieties.
